Implementation

The initial project was implemented gradually according to the needs of the company over the course of about six months to get used to the new software, learn how to use it and be able to make the most of it.

The decision concerned the choice of a CAM software or a MES system, with the latter being preferred. Metronomo.Net is very versatile, customizable according to the needs of suitable for turning. It has been integrated into the company naturally without altering business processes and immediately providing reliable and comprehensive answers.

Initially three people were involved: Eng. Michele Veronesi, the Purchasing Manager and the Quality Manager. Then, the whole team was involved. All objectives were successfully achieved without any deviations from the planned route.

Interview with engineer Michele Veronesi - Founder of Tosatto and Veronesi

What is your core business and what are the particularities of your production?

Our core business consists in the production of small and medium series of turned minute pieces with a diameter of 4 to 42mm. The main difficulty of our business is to be able to provide a product, however elaborate and complex, 100% reliable to respond effectively and efficiently to the needs of our customers.

What needs have prompted you to consider adopting a new MES system?

Before using Metronomo.Net, the daily schedule was paper-based and managed with a large blackboard in the center of the workshop. The management was cumbersome because we could not optimize effectively the production schedule, based on the availability of material and the priorities of the Customers. In addition, operators did not have constant access to the necessary information.

What did it mean for you to choose and use Metronomo.Net?

At the beginning we were undecided on the type of investment to be made: whether to choose a CAM software or a MES system. Metronomo.Net has proved to be very versatile, customizable according to the needs of each company and specific for turning. All in all, a CAM software is almost limiting, disrupts the processes and the modus operandi of the company, consolidated over years of activity. In addition, the CAM would force me to form an internal figure and dedicate it daily to the software. In contrast, Metronomo.Net has integrated into the company naturally and painlessly, without altering business processes and providing immediate reliable and comprehensive answers.

What goals did you have? Were they achieved?

The main objective was to simplify management and production loads, limit errors and costs in a logic of effectiveness and efficiency: have a timely and updated management of warehouse loads and discharges and a precise final control. In general, the end point was to integrate business processes and share information. The initial project was implemented gradually according to our needs and all objectives were successfully achieved without deviations from the path mapped.

Have there been significant deviations from the initial estimated costs?

Absolutely not, on the contrary, further investments were planned later.

How many people were involved in this project within the company?

At the beginning three people were involved: the undersigned, the purchasing manager and the quality manager. Along the way we have involved all staff as we are a family business.

How were the relations with MecMatica both on the commercial and technical side?

Good relations with both the commercial side and your technicians. All the staff was always available to meet our needs, especially with regard to the customization of modules.

Now that Metronomo.Net is up and running, how long has it taken for you to see a tangible return on investment?

The implementation of the Metronomo.Net suite was for our business needs diluted over time (about six months) to gradually get used to the new software, learn how to use it and be able to make the most of it. However, since Metronomo.Net is fully operational, it has taken about 2/3 months to see a significant return on investment.

What main differences did you see?

Today, thanks to the MES Metronomo.Net system from MecMatica, we have finally integrated all our business processes and significantly reduced set-up times.

The touch screen console for collecting electronic declarations of operators, which has replaced both the previous paper reports and the famous blackboard in the center of the workshop, is really fantastic: the information is available to everyone at any time and gives a general overview of all connected machines in real time.

Thanks to the web interface, I can monitor the state of production where, how and when I want it. With the advantage of arriving at the company in the morning already fully aware of the situation of the machines.

Are further projects planned with MecMatica?

Yes, at the moment the future goal is the implementation of Metronomo’s Quality module for quality system monitoring in order to comply with ISO 9001:2008 standards.

In the light of Vs. direct experience, would you recommend MecMatica Srl as a MES system supplier?

Absolutely yes. The use of Metronome involves even more in the activity: it allows to open the mind to further and deeper reasoning regarding, for example, the management of the workload of machines and the reduction of costs and downtime.
